Gum Treatment

Regular (Prophy) and Deep Cleaning (Scaling /Root planing)

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is caused by bacteria. Bacteria consume food and produce a sticky creamy-white waste called plaque. When we brush and floss, we remove this acidic waste. Skipping on good oral hygiene habits causes this material to build between gums and teeth. The gingiva (gum) becomes a war zone between the bacteria and the immune system and the gums around the teeth become inflamed.

Early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis (gum inflammation) as it continues and becomes more advanced, and the patient develops periodontal disease.

Patients with healthy gums and gingivitis will receive prophylactic (regular cleaning twice/year).

Patients with perfect oral hygiene still need to get regular cleaning twice per year as  salivary glands produce calcium which then gets deposited on the teeth and this deposit needs to be removed by a dental professional otherwise it can lead to gum disease.

Bacteria begin to make colonies under the gum and using calcium from one’s saliva they make this resilient substance called calculus. Calculus buildup separates the gums from the teeth and bone loss around the teeth occurs, this could result in serious infection and loss of teeth.
